Pt. Reyes Station, CA, USA — In a new book, Sufi teacher Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee edits a collection of essays from renowned public figures identifying the spiritual roots of our global ecological crisis and the response needed for a balanced sustainable future.

The book’s title, Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth, refers to a developing field that supports spiritual awareness as a foundation for environmental healing and sustainable living. Contributors are distinguished leaders from different spiritual traditions.

Readers will find diverse ways to recall the sacredness of creation, which all contributors agree is imperative for true ecological restoration: Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hahn frames the environmental crisis as a call to live our daily lives more mindfully; Vandana Shiva, Indian feminist and conservationist, recounts the traditional Hindu understanding of food growing as sacred; Franciscan Monk, Richard Rohr identifies Christian misperceptions about the divine as separate from life; Wendell Berry, poet, farmer, calls forth possibilities of a human culture in harmony with nature; and activist Winona LaDuke describes how America’s historical attitudes of land conquest undermine true relationship. Contributors also include: Joanna Macy, Brian Swimme, Bill Plotkin, Sandra Ingerman, and others.

“It’s hard to imagine finding a wiser group of humans than the authors represented here, all of them both thinkers and do-ers in the greatest battle humans have ever faced. An epic collection!” —Bill McKibben, founder 350.org.
