ISKCON Myanmar National Council has released a follow-up statement after visiting the earthquake-affected regions. “Our hearts are heavy witnessing the suffering of so many innocent lives,” said Priya Gopinath Das, General Secretary, “We have personally met affected devotee families and pledged to support them through this difficult time.”
Apart from the unfortunate departure of Ravi Simkhara, no other loss of life has been reported among the devotee community. About half a dozen devotee families have experienced major damage to their homes, with some structures in danger of collapsing. Nearly every devotee household in the affected areas has suffered some level of damage, and all are affected by the loss of power, infrastructure, and services across the city. The official death toll is approaching 3,500, with rescue efforts hampered by intense rainstorms, increasing the risk of disease.
Food Distribution Efforts Continue
According to the latest statement by Balmukunda Das, Chairman of the National Council, “ISKCON’s Food for Life foundation teams continue to distribute hot, fresh prasadam meal boxes daily in Mandalay and Sagaing affected areas. Currently, 1,500 to 2,000 meals are being served every day, and we are committed to continuing this effort as long as needed. Our service is open to all, regardless of background or belief, as an expression of compassion and unity in this difficult time.”
Joining the heroic local efforts is experienced disaster relief worker Arjuna Das from Food for All – UK, who arrived in Mandalay with £12,000 in emergency funds to assist local devotees in food distribution. You can watch videos of his engagement with local efforts यहाँ और यहाँ.
