A new edition of Sarvabhavana’s book Salted Bread, about the persecution of Russian and Armenian devotees in the early days of the Hare Krishna movement during the 1980s in the former USSR, is now available. The book contains a lot of information about the publication and distribution of Srila Prabhupada’s first books under the former communist government.

The book is more or less an autobiography of the author (Sarvabhavana das, who was jailed for two years) and the history of the glorious departure of his good friend, Sacisuta das. Relating the first attempt to spread Krishna consciousness in the Soviet Union according to Srila Prabhupada’s desire, the book recounts stories of run-ins with the KGB and of experiences within jails and psychiatric hospitals. Often painful, the experiences of devotional service in those days are leavened with humor as well.

Recently in Kolkata, India, several newspapers, including the Telegraph, wrote about the launch of the book.

You can order your copy directly from Sarvabhavana das or contact your temple store and ask if they have already the book in stock.

Temple stores may order at a wholesale price.
